Just have look around, there are a wide variety of goods and services in sight. As a white collar living in the urban area like Shanghai, you are consuming almost every day: you take a taxi to the office in the morning, buy your breakfast around the street corner, meet your friends or clients in Starbucks after work, and even enjoy yourself in a nightclub.
You are also bombarded with vast amount of business info on newspapers, websites, BBS and Blogs, or magazines. You’re constantly informed how the stock market is going, whether the world oil price keeps soaring, how quickly RMB is appreciating against dollar, or how a certain domestic company is proudly expanding its business in the global market and so on.
1.Demand:
Customers have disposable income, and they spend money in the market to satisfy their various needs. Customers’ demands are decided by their income, consumption behaviors and psychology, and above all, price.
Demand and price usually have negative relations. It means that when the price declines, they will choose to buy more; whereas, when price grows up, they will choose to buy less.
For example:
Today as the price of notebooks keeps declining, a growing number of young people in China begin to own a notebook! Today, as the oil price is growing, manufactures who used to rely on oil as input are beginning to seek other fuels, which leads to less demand for oil. But stock market is an exception, which means the higher the price, the more our crazy people buy!
2.Supply:
There are always suppliers of certain goods and services as long as there is market demand. Manufactures use labor, capital and raw materials to produce goods and services and sell in the market, for a profit.
Usually, supply and price have positive relations. It means that when the price of a certain product declines, they will choose to supply less, whereas, when price grows up, they will choose to supply more.
For example:
Today, as the housing price of urban areas is growing, an increasing number of investors are joining this market to offer more houses; Remember radio? The price is declining so sharply that no more manufactures are willing to produce it.
3.Equilibrium of demand and supply
There is never perfect and unchanged equilibrium in the market, because supply and demand is always changing, making price change all the time too! But there is an “invisible hand”, or a force, which is always trying to “pull” the demand and supply to the equilibrium point! (Adam Smith said so)
At a given price, when supply exceeds demand too much, which means that there are many producers willing to supply, while there are not too many customers willing to buy, the price will tend to decline to clear the market; Yet, at a given price, when demand exceeds supply too much, which means that there are many customers willing to buy, while there are not too many producers willing to supply, the price will tend to grow;
4.Price elasticity
It’s a very important concept in economics, and economists use it a lot.
What are you going to do when the price of BMW declines to 50 thousand RMB? I guess you will rush to buy one. But what are you going to do when the price of salt declines to 0.1 Yuan per pack? I don’t think you will rush to buy more.
It means that you are sensitive to the price of a car, but you are not very sensitive to the price of salt. OK, in economic terms, it means that the price elasticity of a car is very high, while the price elasticity of salt is relatively very low. Usually, luxury goods have higher elasticity, while necessities or must-products have lower elasticity.
So, if you lower the price of luxuries, you will get more sales revenue; but if you lower the price of necessities, you will get less. Vice versa.
5.Let’s do a little practice in English:
Currently, the pork price is growing in major cities in China, why? Has the sales revenue of pork suppliers declined? Why?
Why electronic products like cameras, cell phones keep declining in price these years? (use demand-supply-analysis and elasticity)

BEC:Hi, Mary, can you print out the sales report of last month for me before 5pm? Thank you!
Well, our sales is declining in Shanghai region, and our market share is also shrinking! Is the market demand for our products dropping? Or, is our competitor taking actions toward us?
1,A wide variety:
Wow, there is a wide variety of daily items on sale in Carrefour!
2,goods and services:
3,consume:
我是一个消费者:I am a consumer. 消费价格指数上涨啦:CPI (Consumption Price index) is growing! I spend much money on consumption every month!

From Samuelsh2008
It can prove to be painstakingly complicated when to it comes to analyze customers’ demands. What’s more complicated is that even the customers themselves fail to make sure what they want in the marketplace.
Yet, in economics, we are always trying to maximize or optimize the outputs while minimizing the inputs or best allocating the limited resources we have. This rule works everywhere. As a consumer, what you are doing is to maximize the personal satisfaction by allocating your limited money (i.e. your disposable income) among various goods or services.
For example, a PC game freak may probably spend 80% of his money on playing CS, leaving the rest 20% on foods for survival. This allocation best works for him, and brings him the highest personal satisfaction.
People are also trying to maximize their lifelong satisfaction by allocating their limited resources, i.e. their wealth and time, on selected activities. For a credit card user, he is using his future money to get higher satisfaction today. It’s like… people earn different amounts of money on different life stages, so credit card issuers are very smart because they offer them the opportunity to smoothen their fluctuating incomes throughout the life journey.
You visit tianya.cn because you don’t have anything else more interesting to do right now. You’re allocating your time to achieve the highest satisfaction with what you have as resources.
I’d like to hear more voices about how you are allocating your resources both in your work and life~~~~

The world had been evolving before Darwin ever existed on earth~~
Darwin is the one who found out the underlying rule by which the world had been running around, yet, he never really invented the evolution theory~~ just for correction.
You probably wanted to say: Darwin is right! But it was weird you also said God, since Darwin didn’t seem to take it that the world was created by God.
Darwin upheld that only the fittest survives, so I was a bit flattered when you said I was the fittest~~~

hehe~~ curiosity is a good thing~~ except sometimes it converts to ignorance~~
we have outsourcing segment becuase no company is capable of covering all the integrated chains in the industry, and whether or not to adopt outsourcing is the result of input-and-output analysis~~~ being an outsourcing or raw material supplier is only the result of social specialization, rather than superiority ranking~~~~
anyway, Exxon & Mobile is the biggest oil supplier in the world, which is what you call raw material supplier, yet it's the biggest conglomerate around the world~~ Being the first class consulting firm, Mckinsey is actually providing outsourcing services to offset the lack of specialty of its clients~~~

Have you ever bought online? I guess most of you have, though it’s just a tiny part of your overall shopping bucket each year.
Since 1998 when 8848 started the first online shop in China, online sales revenue has witnessed drastic growth, and last year, it was history high, reaching more 65 billion RMB (B2B not included).
Among this vast amount, some 80% (which is approximately 52 billion) was generated through C2C websites like Taobao, Ebay and PaiPai.
Taobao.com was undoubtedly the biggest winner in online transaction, with its C2C online sales occupying some 75% of market share in the entire C2C arena.
Yet, B2C seems to have taken a back seat in terms of scale and amount, with its total sales revenue only added up to around 13 billion in 2007. Top sites like DangDang and Amazon China have currently announced their reports to the public, as we safely predicted, they are still the movers and shakers in the B2C market, though a lot other B2C websites are said to be making money in their own niche markets with their unique products and services.
Focusing on the B2C market a bit, some say that there is every reason to be optimistic about the B2C market, as C2C and B2C is actually not incompatible, on the contrary, they can peacefully coexist and even supplement each other in one way or the other based on their own comparative advantages.
“Taobao can’t do everything”, one internet expert said, “when I’m about to buy a digital camera, my first thought is to visit an offline shopping mall, or alternatively, log on reliable B2C sites to get it done. I don’t trust Taobao much when it comes to buy products with relatively higher prices”.
What’s more, when a B2C site focuses on a certain group of products, they would be able to offer buyers the same products with more favorable prices, more person-tailored services, and better shopping experience.
Statistics show that we have up to 0.1 billion internet surfers around China, and in a recent survey, about 80% of them have expressed their positive possibility of shopping online, and about 50% of them have already shopped somewhere on the internet before. It’s true that some are still hesitating and showing their skepticism about online security and credibility, but they are gradually willing to give a shoot in the days to come. It’s been estimated that B2C online sales will grow at double-digit rate for the next 10 years.
It either doesn’t require a huge sum of upfront investment to get a B2C website started, and there is also no much entrance barrier for investors to join the market. All you have to do is to get a couple of IT amateurs to design the page, set up a background system, put products info onsite, make sure you got upstream suppliers, and voila, the business is ready! But once your business gets growing, you may have to get your online system continuously upgraded to meet the increasing orders and customers inquiries. Yet, that’s another story.
The following is briefly the percentages of major categories sold online in 2007.
Category of products sold on B2C websites
Revenue percentage
Air tickets and Hotels 33%
Electronic and digital products 28%
Books, DVDs, Education 18%
Clothes, Cosmetics and Fashionables 12%
Game Cards, Phone rechargeable cards and others 9%
As for air tickets and hotel reservations, Ctrip.com is the prior website for most of the internet users. It has partnerships with almost all the domestic airlines, which makes it very easy for the buyers to obtain the first-hand flights and price information. Moreover, Ctrip.com also enables the buyers to get access to millions of hotels around the major cities in China and book in advance conveniently. Its competitor, Elong.com, also did acceptably well in the market.
Books and DVDs continued to be the strength for Dangdang and Amazon China. Selling standardized products like books and DVDs, along with its hard-won price advantages, and efficient online management systems, they are enjoying a safe competitiveness in online shop industry.
Other noticeable sites are m18.com and ocj.com.cn, which basically focus their eyes on urban residents, and try to provide the most fashionable clothes, cosmetics, digital products, and family appliances to people with relatively higher income and distinctive shopping habits.
Yet, websites like 360buy.com and newegg.com.cn are selling the most of electronic and digital products online around China. Recent news had it that 360buy.com has got around 10 million USD of VC investment, and it’s now striving to develop into the biggest B2C platform in China.
What customers want, however, is actually very simple. They choose to buy online rather than offline because they expect to obtain their desired products with lower prices and convenient services. It seems that price still remains an important consideration for our online shoppers. But efficient ordering, customized services and trustworthiness are also becoming increasingly important to attract those less sensitive to prices.
For B2C companies, they are constantly faced with following questions: logistics, information system, online payment, products, bargaining power on purchasing and comparative advantages over offline shops.
Most of B2Cs in China still rely on third party logistics to get their shipping done, and EMS is the most frequently used one. Yet, third party logistics don’t ensure timely delivery and superb services. The deliverers are not even dressed in uniforms to enforce the brands of B2C companies. How to tradeoff between self-owned logistics and outsourcing, and how to reduce shipping cost while improving logistic efficiency is still the biggest concern for B2C companies.
One more thing, lack of advanced online system is another problem for B2C adventurers. Online ordering requires smooth and friendly online navigations, prompt search engines, continuously updated online information, interactive interfaces, timely responses, personalized account to track down order status, and available access to inquiries. What’s more, the company also needs internal system to record and manage the customers’ shopping lists, and make sure all departments are integrated in the system to improve collaborations. This means extra money spent on web technologies.
Online payment is another headache for them. Alipay ( or as we call it ZhiFuBao) has made it very easy to pay online, and the payment is primarily developed so the customers would be safely protected from frauds or cheating. But as B2C keeps growing in scale, it’s time for them to come up with their unique payment system to better facilitate B2C websites.
Above all, the core competitiveness for current B2C websites is one that is related to the products they offer. They have to spend great time and efforts to build their upstream relations, so as to guarantee the availability of products online. More importantly, they have to gain bargain power over their suppliers to get lower purchasing prices. But in reality, this proves to be rather difficult. As purchasing price is highly dependent on the volume of purchase, B2C websites are finding themselves a bit weak in price bargain, since online sales is by far smaller compared to their offline counterparts. Some of the sites are even sacrificing their profit margin in exchange for sales volume, but from the long-term perspective, it’s really not smart to do so.
Yet, other companies like Goodbaby, which has its own offline factories and market channels, is now moving online, by making full use of their offline capabilities. And statistics show it’s doing fairly good. Similar cases are those of Sony, Dell, BenQ, and Lianhua OK.
The above is just a snap at how the current B2C market in china is doing.
Your client is Guomei, the biggest retailer in China selling family appliances, electronic and digital products, and other alike. It desires to boost its online sales revenue in 2008. Your team is invited to give GuoMei recommendations and related analysis on the following questions:
1, Does online retailing of family appliances and electronic products have a promising potential?
2, Should Guo Mei move its efforts online?
3, What proposals do you think to be the most important for Guo Mei to do well online?
i have read all.
It's an acute analysis of the B2C market in China.
Yeah, the customers care about most is the price of the products and the trustworthiness of the website. So will GuoMei create a online market depends on what kind of margin they had gain now. If they have to make a good trustworthiness, how much they have to invest in it.
i am not a business man. so i stop here.

My english is poor.
I've tried my best to answer these three questions.
1.Absolutly YES.With the developing of enocomic, folks will buy products with more convenient way, more favorable price, and more person-tailored sevices.
2.As the online retailing of family appliances and electronic products have a promising potential,Guo Mei should move its efforts online.
3.We can infer from this article that the most important for Guo Mei to do well online depens on how to deal with following questions: logistics, information system, online payment, bargaining power on purchasing and comparative advantages over offline shops.
BTW, it seems that I dont answer at all.

it only reveals your ignorance in business~~~
customers’ experience is crucial to promote your brand image and strengthen loyalty of your targeted buyers~~ to do this, you need to keep an eye on every single step of a customer’s shopping procedures~~
there is pre-sale service during which you’re supposed to deal with customers’ inquiries, display what’s good about your product, and ensure the customers by warranties and bala~~~
there is also after-sale, or alternatively, post-sale service during which you’re supposed to fix their complaints, get their breaking-down repaired, further recommend related products to them and stir up their shopping impulse by various promotional activities and so on~~~
usually, post-sale service is indispensable to maintain and optimize your customers, and even extract more values and prolong their shopping life~~~

web analytical tools have it that there are an average of 0.8 million individual visitors logging on tianya.cn everyday, which ranks tianya.cn the second largest BBS site in China, second only to china.com~~
it is interesting to see how web surfers are choosing their favorite BBS sites to get the most updated information and instantly talking with millions of chatters online~~~ but here comes the question: what is motivating you to log on your favorite BBS sites everyday?
1, out of habit: you have been lurking around this BBS forum for thousands of times that you feel like being uneasy without keep this habit going on~~~ it’s pretty much like when you get addicted to smoking~~~
2, get your desired info: for a stock market investor, he probably visits hexun.com everyday to get informed of what’s going on in the stock market, and how the price has been fluctuating~~~
3, an inherent interest to join various social groups and make friends: you put forth your ideas to various threads and heatedly debate with others on a controversial issue~~
4, desire to be an expert in a certain area: you post your thread and express your unique points of views on most publicly concerned issues, and expect viewers to recognize your wits~~
So, can you tell me why you are here in this BBS forum?
